Defining community capacity building
Community capacity building is an approach to community development that focuses on strengthening the internal assets, knowledge, leadership, and systems of a community — rather than importing solutions from outside. The goal is not to fix communities but to amplify what already exists within them.
Why it matters
Traditional approaches to community development often treat communities as passive recipients of services or resources. Capacity building flips this model — positioning community members as the primary agents of change, with organizations like B2MC playing a supporting and amplifying role.
What it looks like in practice
Community capacity building includes developing local leadership, building skills and knowledge, strengthening community organizations, creating networks and connections, and building the financial and organizational resources communities need to sustain change over time.
How B2MC applies this model
Every B2MC program is designed with community capacity building as its foundation. We do not deliver services to the community — we build the conditions in which the community can build itself. This means investing in skills, leadership, and systems that will outlast any individual program or grant cycle.
