Our Mission
Built on belief in community potential
B2MC builds community capacity by equipping underserved youth, families, adults, and seniors with the knowledge, skills, resources, and opportunities needed to thrive and strengthen their communities.
"Every person in our community has the potential to lead. Our job is to make sure they have everything they need to do it."
We believe that community transformation begins with investing in people — not programs for programs' sake, but holistic development that meets people where they are and takes them where they can go.
Operating from the heart of Bedford-Stuyvesant, we work with every generation: children in our ASEP Jr. pathway, teens in ASEP Youth, and adults and seniors through ASET. Because strong communities need everyone at the table.
Our Founder
Donald Oliver
Founder & Executive Director
"Every generation of Bed-Stuy has risen to meet its moment. We're here to make sure this one has every tool it needs to rise higher."
Donald Oliver founded Building Minds Building Communities in 2023 with a simple conviction: that the most powerful force for change in any community is the community itself. What it needs is not outside experts parachuting in, but systems that develop local knowledge, cultivate local leadership, and create pathways to local prosperity.
Donald's approach to community work is deeply shaped by his faith and decades of pastoral service — a background that informs both his long-view thinking and his belief in the inherent dignity and potential of every person he serves. That foundation is visible in how B2MC is built: not around programs, but around people.
Located at 102 Jefferson Avenue, B2MC is not just in Bedford-Stuyvesant — it is of Bedford-Stuyvesant. Donald's leadership ensures that every program, every framework, and every partnership reflects the community it is designed to serve.
How We Work
The B2MC Community Capacity Building Model™
Our framework is a proven six-stage progression that transforms individual growth into collective community power.
Knowledge
Equipping people with the foundational skills and information to navigate their world with confidence.
Opportunity
Connecting community members to pathways — educational, economic, and social — that were previously out of reach.
Engagement
Building the habits of civic participation, neighborhood belonging, and mutual accountability.
Development
Growing individuals holistically — intellectually, professionally, and personally — over time.
Leadership
Cultivating the next generation of voices, advocates, and decision-makers from within the community.
Community Transformation
When individuals grow, neighborhoods change. That's the full arc of what we're building toward.
The outcome of our model
Learn. Lead. Create. Prosper.
What We Stand For
Our Core Values
Community First
Every decision, program, and partnership is evaluated through one question: does this genuinely serve the people of Bedford-Stuyvesant and beyond?
Dignity in Service
We treat every participant as a whole person with strengths, goals, and agency — not a statistic to be counted or a problem to be fixed.
Radical Inclusion
From children ages 5 to seniors, from recent arrivals to lifelong residents — everyone belongs here and everyone's growth matters.
Long-View Thinking
Community transformation doesn't happen in a fiscal year. We build programs and relationships designed to last across generations.
Accountability & Transparency
We are stewards of community trust and donor resources. We hold ourselves to the highest standards of honesty and open reporting.
Locally Led
The best people to shape the future of Bed-Stuy are the people who live here. We develop and elevate local leadership at every level.
